A Native Cottage Garden that Goes Beyond Beauty

A Romantic, Pollinator-Focused Garden in Morris County

Tucked into the Rock Ridge neighborhood of Denville, this richly layered garden reimagines the charm of a traditional cottage landscape through a native, ecologically driven lens. Inspired by the homeowner’s Irish heritage, the design embraces a soft, romantic palette of pinks, whites, blues, and purples—creating a space that feels both timeless and deeply connected to place.

Spanning conditions from full sun to full shade, the planting design weaves together resilient native species that offer beauty and habitat in equal measure. Anchoring plants like Viburnum dentatum and Panicum virgatum provide structure and movement, while Dicentra eximia, Penstemon digitalis and hirsutus, Monarda fistulosa, and Agastache bring a long season of blooms that draw in bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

An irregular bluestone path winds gently through the garden, dividing the space into four distinct planting areas and inviting exploration at every turn. This sense of movement and discovery is complemented by a newly installed gravel driveway, which enhances the naturalistic feel while adding texture and cohesion to the overall design.

The result is a lush, pollinator-rich landscape that blooms across the seasons: a native garden that blends cottage-style charm with ecological purpose, and celebrates both heritage and habitat.
